What is a Competitor Campaign?
A competitor campaign is an advertising campaign that targets the brand name of key competitors to your business, allowing your ads to show up when users search for a competing business or brand.
Pros of Competitor Campaigns
There are many benefits of competitor campaigns. For starters, running a competitor campaign on Google allows you to capture traffic that was intended to go towards your competitor, which could potentially drive business. Your ads are also able to appear in searches that they wouldn't have otherwise, thus increasing the amount of exposure the ad receives.
Cons of Competitor Campaigns
However, there are also a few downsides to running this type of campaign. An issue that we often encounter with competitor campaigns is that Google users may accidentally click into your ad thinking it's for another business only to leave the ad without taking any action when they realize their error. So while this did expose the person to your brand, they ultimately didn't convert. If you consider clicks like this to be "wasted," then you might want to reconsider running a competitor campaign because there is no way to guarantee that this won't happen. Because of the potential of mistaken clicks, we don't often suggest competitor campaigns unless the client has a low lost impression share and has maxed out all their opportunity within their main campaign.
